The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings opened their regular season with a weekend to remember, combining community spirit and strong on-ice play at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Things kicked off Friday, September 19, with a tailgate party in the arena parking lot. Fans filled the lot to enjoy live music, food, and drinks before packing the stands for the season opener against the Ponoka Stampeders. The energy carried into the rink, where the Kings delivered a 6-2 victory to start the year on the right note.
Captain Cole Tweit was a steady force throughout the weekend, posting back-to-back point nights and finishing the two-game stretch tied for the team lead in scoring with three points. He shared the spotlight with rookie forward William Lapohn, who also tallied three points and scored his first Heritage Junior Hockey League goal. The milestone moments didn’t stop there, as Brandon Corbeil and Bryce Tweit each found the back of the net for their first career league goals as well.
Friday also marked a special night for Connor White. The veteran goaltender suited up for his first game on the home bench at the Family Centre since 2020, bringing experience and stability to the back end in his return.
The Kings carried their momentum into Saturday night, where they hosted the High River Flyers in a hard-fought matchup. After trading chances through the opening half, the Kings pulled away late to secure a 5-3 victory, completing a clean sweep of their opening weekend.
General Manager Cody Holdaway said the team has plenty to be proud of after a perfect start, but also knows the work is just beginning.
“There’s definitely lots to celebrate after opening weekend,” said Holdaway. “But there’s also lots to work on. The boys will be back at it in practice this week as we get ready for Red Deer.”
The Kings return to home ice Friday night, when they host the Red Deer Vipers at the Strathmore Family Centre. Puck drop is set for 7:45 p.m.
