Day three of the Alberta teachers’ strike is in full swing.
Thousands of teachers are on the picket line with hundreds of thousands of students out of school.
The Agra Risk Wheatland Kings have announced free admission to any home games for teachers and support staff.
According to the King’s general manager, Cody Holdaway, the decision to make admission free for teachers comes from a personal connection.
“Our head coach is a teacher; my director of hockey operations is a teacher. Our trainer is an educational assistant; our game day operations coordinator is an educational assistant. My own mom works in the public school system,” said Holdaway.
“We’re proud to offer free admission to all home games for teachers and their support staff for the duration of the teacher strike.”
The way teachers and support staff can get into the game is simply by telling the organization which school they work at.
The team was going to ask teachers and support staff to show their local ATA card, but realized it wouldn’t work as teachers had to leave everything in their classroom.
“We’re going to use the honour system. I know Strathmore’s pretty honest. All you’ve got to do is come in and we’ll make it as hassle-free as possible,” explained Holdaway.
As of Oct. 8, there is no word on when the teachers’ strike will end.
The Kings hit the ice Saturday (Oct. 11). This is their only game over the long weekend, where they play against the Sylvan Lake Wranglers.
